Recycle Electronics

6/1/2004

Wake County residents who recycle electronic equipment during the month of June can enter a drawing to win a Panasonic Lumix Digital Camera valued at $450.00.  Panasonic and the County want to recognize and reward environmental stewardship, and one lucky customer of the North Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility will get the prize!  Entry forms are available at the facility during normal operating hours, Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Major manufacturers Panasonic, JVC, Lexmark, Sharp and Sony are partners in Wake's ongoing "product stewardship" initiative by sharing the cost to recycle the products they make.  A grant from the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance and revenue from the Wake County Solid Waste Management Enterprise Fund complete the funding mechanism.

All types of old electronics can be recycled - like televisions, radios, microwaves, telephones and stereo equipment - if it is made by Panasonic, JVC, Lexmark, Sharp or Sony.  "We want consumers to think about environmental stewardship before making a purchase" said Wake Waste Reduction Specialist Kelley Dennings, "and not just for electronics" she added.  The Product Stewardship Institute at the University of Massachusetts (http://www.productstewardship.us/) is now working in seven product categories, including carpet, paint and pesticides, developing initiatives that reduce the health and environmental impacts from consumer products.

Residents can also recycle computer equipment at the North Wake site, regardless of the manufacturer.  The facility is located off of Durant Road in North Raleigh.  All electronics collected will be recycled or properly disposed of to conserve natural resources, save energy and keep the products and some of their hazardous components from winding up in the landfill.  To learn more about this and other Wake County waste reduction and recycling programs, please visit the recycling information section of our site by clicking here or call (919) 856-5277.
