Flu Shot Clinics Dec. 4

12/1/2004

Wake County Human Services (WCHS) will hold a special flu shot clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, December 4, for high-risk individuals. The clinic will be held on the second floor of the Human Services Sunnybrook Building, 10 Sunnybrook Road, Clinic E.

No appointments are needed. All individuals will be seen on a walk-in basis. There is no charge for the vaccine. Individuals with Medicare are asked to bring their cards to the clinic.

"We have recently received additional flu vaccine and want to make sure people who fall within the high-risk categories who still need to receive a flu shot can do so," said Gibbie Harris, WCHS Community Health director. "There is still time for a flu shot to be effective in helping individuals to build up their immunity to fight off the flu and its complications."

Individuals at high risk, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are:

  • Adults age 65 years and over;
  • Children six to 23 months of age;
  • Caregivers or household contacts of a child under six months of age;
  • Pregnant women;
  • People with diabetes, asthma, lung, kidney, heart, or blood disease;
  • People who take steroids, chemotherapy or have a disease that weakens the immune system (including HIV);
  • Children receiving long-term aspirin therapy;
  • Residents of a nursing home or long-term facility;
  • Health care workers who provide direct patient care for the majority of each day.
