To make voting more convenient for those who choose to vote in advance of the November 2 General Election, the Wake County Board of Elections will open 12 additional One-Stop Absentee Voting Sites around the county from October 23-30, Board of Elections Chairman John Gilbert announced today.
One-stop voting allows voters to cast a ballot in advance of the General Election on November 2. The votes are not tallied until after the polls close on Election Day.
In 2002, the BOE established eight One-Stop sites, in addition to the main Board of Elections office in downtown Raleigh. This year, the Board plans to open 12 additional sites, along with the downtown location.
"Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we are committed to increasing voter turnout in Wake County," Gilbert said. "We believe one way to reach this goal is to provide more convenience and opportunities for voters to cast their ballots. We appreciate the support of the State Board of Elections in assisting us with this goal."
Several sites in Raleigh, Cary, Garner, Wake Forest and Wendell are the same as those used previously. Some new sites this year include the Apex Community Center, Knightdale Town Hall, Pullen Arts Center near N.C. State University, the Wake County Office Park in southeastern Raleigh and Wake Technical Community College in southern Wake County.
"In an effort to use our resources most efficiently, we looked at our high-growth areas and areas that offer potential for higher turnout – like the student population – and tried to establish sites that make sense geographically and offer more opportunities to voters," Gilbert said.
During the One-Stop Absentee voting period, voters may visit any one of the 13 sites to cast their ballot. On Election Day, citizens vote in their assigned precinct. Absentee voting also is available by mail for those who cannot vote in person.
