PAWS Honor Walk

9/3/2004

Support Wake County's homeless companion animals by participating in this year's PAWS (Protection Animals We Salute) event! In lieu of its annual Paws to Recycle Dog Walk, the Wake County Animal Care, Control & Adoption Center is sponsoring the PAWS for Companion Animals Honor Walk, Saturday, September 11, at Historic Oak View County Park in Raleigh.

Leading the walk, which begins at 10 a.m., will be a dog adopted from the Center that has begun a new life as a bomb-sniffing dog at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Also on hand will be members of the Wake County Sheriff's Office K-9 Corps.

Register in advance for $20 at the Wake County Adoption Center, 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh, or register beginning at 9 a.m. at Historic Oak View on the day of the event for $25.

Donated proceeds will be divided between the Wake County Adoption Center and various organizations that participate in the event. Half the money raised will go to the Adoption Center to help purchase an automatic watering system for animals at the facility and the other half will go to enforcement agencies and search-and-rescue organizations that participate in the event to help offset the cost of training and the purchase of bulletproof vests and other items needed to protect their companion animals when working to fight crime.

"Last year we raised approximately $20,000 for homeless companion animals," said Mykol Hill, PAWS Coordinator. "This year our goal is to double that amount."

The Wake County Adoption Center will also host a rabies vaccination clinic, microchip clinic and a tree sale to help raise money. Rabies vaccinations are $5 per animal, and microchips are $25 per animal.

Historic Oak View County Park is located on Carya Drive, off Poole Road at the Beltline (Exit 15). For more information call the Wake County Adoption Center at 250-1481 or click here.
