Animal Shelter Changes Name

6/11/2004

The Wake County Animal Shelter announces today that it has changed its name to The Wake County Animal Control, Care & Adoption Center.

"We are not solely a sheltering facility," said Nancy Clemmons, Shelter Manager. "With the name change, we hope to create a more positive image, increase the number of adoptions, and reduce pet overpopulation."

Changes in the community over the years have spurred the name change, Clemmons said. The new name reflects the Adoption Center's rich heritage and determination to provide beneficial outreach programs, to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, to decrease the number of unwanted litters being produced and to educate the community about the laws pertinent to the proper maintenance of companion animals.

The Wake County Animal Control Program is in charge of enforcing the Wake County Ordinance and the North Carolina General Statutes that relate to animal control, animal welfare and public health. The second component of the program is the Adoption Center. Adoption Center staff assure that proper care is given to animals while in the care of Wake County.
