Wake County Now Taking Appointments For Free Flu Shots Under New CDC Criteria, 12/28/2004
Wake County Human Services is now scheduling appointments for free flu shots for all high-risk individuals under the new guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to flu shots, a limited supply of FluMist is available for healthy people between the ages of five and 49 at Wake County's Raleigh clinic. Walk-in flu shot clinics will also be held in Fuquay-Varina and Zebulon on specific days throughout January.

'White Flag' Night Called for Emergency Shelter from Cold, 12/23/2004
Agencies providing shelter for homeless individuals will implement the "White Flag" (WF) initiative this week based on the cold-weather evening forecast over the next few days. In extremely cold conditions, White Flag sites provide shelter beyond their regular capacity.

Wake County 2004 Property Taxes Due on January 5, 12/20/2004
Wake County property owners have until January 5, 2005, to pay their 2004 real property taxes without interest being charged. The County mails out real estate tax bills each July, with payments due September 1, but by state law, taxpayers have until January 5 to pay without interest.

County Urges Public Comment on PCB Report by Dec. 27, 12/17/2004
Wake County Government officials are urging citizens to quickly comment on a public health assessment report covering toxic PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) contamination from the Ward Transformer site located near Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). Officials are concerned that citizens may not be aware of the recent report by the federal Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR), classifying the Ward site as a public health hazard, or its December 27 public comment deadline.

Residents Can Wrap Up Season by Recycling Holiday Waste, 12/14/2004
Wake County residents will be able to recycle extra holiday waste for two weeks after Christmas during the Solid Waste Division's 11th annual "Holiday Wrap-Up" event. Items such as wrapping paper, trees, gift boxes and greeting cards can be dropped off for recycling at five Convenience Centers across the County beginning December 26 through January 9, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Board of Commissioners Sets 2005 Meeting Schedule, 12/08/2004
The Wake County Board of Commissioners on Monday set its 2005 meeting schedule. The meetings will be held on the first and third Mondays of the month (unless changed for holidays or other reasons), beginning at 2 p.m., with a public comment period for citizens to address the Board from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Wake County Human Services (WCHS) has filled its 2,700 available appointments for high-risk individuals for its flu shot clinic as of 3 p.m. today. Since 9 a.m. Monday, the agency received 12,535 calls for appointments.

Wake to Distribute Flu Vaccine to Local Providers; Flu Clinics Resume Nov. 8 by Appointment Only, 11/01/2004
Wake County Human Services (WCHS) will begin taking appointments by telephone today for flu vaccination clinics scheduled to resume Monday, November 8. The county will screen individuals over the phone to determine if they fall within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) latest definitions of high-risk individuals for complications from influenza.

Wake, NCSU to Treat Students for Possible Meningitis Exposure, 10/28/2004
Wake County Human Services and N.C. State University (NCSU) officials are strongly urging individuals who attended a party after 10 p.m., Friday, October 22, at 611 Chamberlain Road, Raleigh, to be treated with preventive medicine for meningitis. Preliminary tests indicate meningococcal meningitis in Jonathan Davis, age 18, who attended the party, which was held near the NCSU campus. Davis is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is hospitalized at UNC Hospitals.

Absentee Voting by Mail Ends Soon; One-Stop Early Voting Continues, 10/22/2004
If you plan to vote absentee by mail, you have only until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26, to have the request in the Board of Elections Office. You may submit a letter to request an absentee ballot that should include the voter's name, date of birth, residence address, address to which the ballot should be mailed (if different than the residence address), daytime telephone number and the voter's signature.

Wake County Refinances Bonds, Saves $4.8 M in Interest, 10/21/2004
The combination of lower interest rates and Wake County's AAA bond rating allowed the County to refinance portions of general obligation bonds and save taxpayers $4.8 million in interest.

Wake County, NCSU to Host Rabies Clinic October 23, 10/20/2004
To help protect you and your pets, the Wake County Animal Care, Control & Adoption Center and the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine will host a rabies clinic Saturday, October 23, at the Wake County Adoption Center, 820 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh. The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additional One-Stop Voting Sites Now Open, 10/20/2004
Wake County registered voters will find an absentee voting site near them beginning Saturday, Oct. 23, when the County's Board of Elections opens 12 One-Stop Absentee voting sites in addition to the main site operating in downtown Raleigh.

Wake Developing Best Strategy for Use of Flu Vaccines, 10/15/2004
Wake County Human Services is anticipating shipments of flu vaccine over the next week, which will bring its supply to approximately 9,500 doses; however, requests from local health care providers serving high-risk individuals total 25,000, with additional requests coming in daily from local citizens.

Wake County Human Services Temporarily Suspends Flu Shots, 10/07/2004
Due to the flu vaccine shortage, Wake County Human Services has temporarily suspended all of its flu clinics. Any future availability of the vaccine will be for high-risk populations, as defined under the new guidelines issued today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

County Welcomes Public Comment on SW Wake Area Land Use Plan, 10/07/2004
The Wake County Planning Department is beginning the process of updating the Southwest Wake Area Land Use Plan. An initial public open house to discuss the plan update is set for Tuesday, October 19, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the CC Jones Building, 309 Holleman St. in Apex.

Commissioner Bryan Appointed to NCACC Board, 08/26/2004
Wake County Commissioner Joe Bryan has been appointed to a one-year term on the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ Board of Directors by NCACC President J. Breeden Blackwell of Cumberland County. Bryan was elected to the Wake County Board in 2002 and is currently the vice chair.

Last school year the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division, in partnership with the Wake County Public School System and City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services, developed Feed the Bin, a new paper-recycling program for schools to replace the school igloo recycling program.

Wake County Hazard Mitigation Plan Review, 08/18/2004
The Wake County Planning Board will hold a public meeting to receive additional input on the draft Wake County Hazard Mitigation Plan. There will be a review of the findings of the study and the hazard mitigation actions that the County will be undertaking in the next 5 years to reduce community vulnerability to natural hazards. The Planning Board met Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at 1:30 pm. The Planning Board will continue their discussion at their Wednesday, September 15, 2004 meeting.

Wake Board of Elections Announces Change of Canvass Date, 08/18/2004
The Wake County Board of Elections will meet at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 20, to review provisional ballots cast in the August 17 Second Primary. The canvass originally had been scheduled for Tuesday, August 24.

Wake County Emergency Management Monitoring Hurricane Charley, 08/13/2004
Due to the threat of severe weather from Hurricane Charley, Wake County Emergency Management teams are closely monitoring the storm's track. Emergency response agencies around the county are on call, and citizens are encouraged to stay tuned to news media reports and take appropriate precautions. Links to information and hurricane preparedness checklists can also be found on Wake County's Web site, www.wakegov.com. In the event of an emergency, residents should call 9-1-1.

Wake Board of Elections to Hold Second Democratic Primary, 08/05/2004
A Second Democratic Party Primary will be held in Wake County on August 17, 2004, for the Superintendent of Public Instruction. All polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., and voters will vote in the precinct where they are registered.

New Voter Cards to Be Mailed After August 17 Second Primary, 08/03/2004
If you completed a new voter registration application or a change of address and mailed it to the Wake County Board of Elections after June 25, 2004, it will not be processed until after the August 17, 2004, Second Primary. By law, no registrations or changes can be made until after the Second Primary.

New-Look Restaurant Sanitation Scorecards to Begin in August, 07/26/2004
The restaurant inspection process is the same, but the sanitation score grade cards posted after the inspection will have a different look. State environmental health officials are rolling out the new score cards, which will be used in restaurant inspections beginning August 1.

Wake County has been awarded three NACo Achievement Awards – for its Intergovernmental Coordination and Fiscal Resources programs in the Department of Environmental Services, and for its PRO-Familia program in the Department of Human Services.

Wake County Seeks Public Comment on Aging Plan, 07/12/2004
Wake County Human Services, in partnership with Resources for Seniors, Inc., is seeking public comment on the county’s 2004-2008 plan on aging. The report, "Growing Older Living with Dignity," looks closely at health, personal care, safety, housing, transportation and economic self-sufficiency issues for older adults in Wake County. Members of the public are invited to review the plan and submit comments through Sept. 1, 2004.

Wake County Confirms Case of Whooping Cough, 07/09/2004
Wake County Community Health Director Gibbie Harris confirmed today a single case of pertussis, or whooping cough, in Wake County. Officials with Wake County Human Services are working with local healthcare providers to provide the needed prophylaxis or treatment for anyone who is believed to have come in contact with the infected individual.

One-Stop Absentee voting gets under way on Thursday, July 1, at the Wake County Board of Elections. It will continue on weekdays through July 16, and conclude on Saturday, July 17. One-stop voting allows voters to cast a ballot in advance for the July 20 Primary Election. The votes are not tallied until after the polls close on Primary Election Day.

Absentee Voting for July 20 Primary Now Available, 06/07/2004
If you are registered to vote in Wake County, you may request an absentee ballot by mail from the Board of Elections. North Carolina General Statute 163-230.2 states that a written request for an absentee ballot by mail is valid only if it is personally written entirely by the requester or the requester's near relative, or is on a form generated by the County Board of Elections and signed by the requester or near relative.

Officials with the North Carolina Division of Public Health today announced that they are issuing advisories against eating all fish from Brier Creek downstream of Brier Creek Reservoir in Wake County, and carp and catfish from Lake Crabtree, because fish in these areas have shown high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Wake Schools Pilot Recycling Program, 05/06/2004
As part of Wake County Public School System's Recycling Pilot Program, new and improved recycling ideas are being tested at 15 public schools in Wake County through the end of this school year. Wake County Solid Waste Management, Keep America Beautiful and School System staffs have been working together since last fall to launch the program, which combines strong environmental education activities with recycling operations. Plans to phase the updated recycling services and education into all schools over the next few years follow the recommendations of the County's Environmental Stewardship Agenda, which states that "students will become environmentally literate and motivated to be active environmental stewards."

Southern Regional Center to Expand Women's Services, 04/28/2004
Women and their families in southern Wake County will soon have a new, after-hours option for healthcare. Beginning May 4, and continuing each Tuesday from 5-8 p.m., the Wake County Southern Regional Center, 130 N. Judd Parkway NE in Fuquay-Varina, will offer a health clinic for women who currently have prenatal care with the County. The service will eventually expand to other Wake County women.

Immunization Week Emphasizes Vaccination of Infants, 04/22/2004

County Launches Online Building Inspection System, 04/22/2004
The Wake County Inspections/Development Plans/Permits (IDPP) Division, in partnership with MobileHWY, has launched an online inspection system. Contractors, developers and private citizens can now submit inspection requests, cancel inspection requests, find inspection results, view project notes and locate permit information from any computer connected to the Internet.

Wake County Awards Four Waste Reduction Grants, 03/01/2004

Wake County Closes Remaining C&D Landfill, 02/25/2004
When the South Wake (Feltonsville) Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris landfill closed on Friday, February 27, Wake County effectively got out of the "C&D business," though drop-off recycling services will continue for drywall and wood pallets at the North Wake Solid Waste Management Complex. The law does not require C&D debris to be buried in the more costly "Subtitle D"-lined landfill, as was federally mandated for municipal solid waste in 1993. For the layperson this means that keeping this type of garbage out of the County's North Wake Landfill is cost-effective, efficient and good for the economy.

Electronics Makers Partner with County to Recycle, 02/16/2004
Five of the largest electronics manufacturers are helping to make recycling more economical and accessible for Wake County residents. JVC, Lexmark, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony have teamed up with the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division to set up a permanent electronics-recycling program for their equipment.

Wake County Adds Tax Collection Sites in Apex, Rolesville, Wake Forest, 02/11/2004

With these additions, the County now offers 10 tax collection sites for those who wish to pay their bills in person rather than mailing them.

Many states have child passenger safety laws; however, there are gaps and exemptions which diminish the protection every child needs while riding in a motor vehicle. Citizens Urged to Reduce and Recycle Phone Books, 02/06/2004
It's that time of year when new telephone books are distributed and outdated ones need to be recycled. Wake County's 13th-annual Telephone Book Recycling Program takes place Monday, February 16, through Friday, April 16, coinciding with the delivery of new telephone books throughout the County. During last year's campaign, more than 350,000 telephone books were collected for recycling by individuals and businesses in the County.

County Partners, Citizens To Study Radon In Air, Water, 02/04/2004
Wake County Environmental Services, in partnership with N.C. State University's Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) and the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Radiation Protection Section, is launching a countywide investigation of radon levels in indoor air and water. The Wake County Comprehensive Groundwater Study, adopted in September 2003, recommended the study.

Commissioners Commit Revenue to Fund Sports, Cultural Projects, 01/20/2004
The Wake County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved funding for six projects to benefit organized sports and arts projects around the county, using $4 million from its portion of Occupancy and Prepared Food/Beverage Tax proceeds over the next years. Projects in Wake Forest, Cary, Apex, Garner and Fuquay-Varina, as well as the Carolina Ballet, will receive funding through the allocation.

Don't Trash Phone Books, 01/15/2004
Wake County would like to remind area residents to wait to recycle, rather than discard, their old telephone books as new directories are landing on their doorsteps. The County's annual Telephone Book Recycling Program will run from February 16 to April 16, with 28 dropoff sites in all 12 municipalities in Wake County.

Service to Provide Transportation to Southern Region, 01/09/2004
Beginning in February 2004 Transportation and Rural ACcesS, or TRACS, will provide transportation for a small fee per ride to citizens in the southern region of Wake County, including Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Willow Springs, a yet-to-be-determined area of Apex and an unincorporated section north of Fuquay-Varina.

Libraries, Solid Waste Facilities Close Early, 01/09/2004
Wake County Public Libraries will close at 5 p.m. today due to the weather and its effects. Wake County government offices are open on regular schedule today, but parks are closed. Emergency management staff will continue to monitor conditions and prepare for any necessary emergency response but do not plan at this time to open the Wake County Emergency Operations Center.

The Wake Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors invites media, farm landowners, farmers, County Commissioners, local town officials and the public to celebrate the formation of Wake County's first Voluntary Agricultural Districts. Designation as a Voluntary Agricultural District offers landowners a voluntary, non-binding means of preserving farmland against non-farm development.
