Kiosks
6/2/2003
Wake County recently completed installation of Environmental Education Center kiosks at 14 recycling facilities located throughout the County. These informational bulletin boards have been built at all 11 County convenience centers, North and South Wake Multi-Material Recycling sites and the school igloo recycling site at Zebulon Middle School.
The Solid Waste Division is partnering with other County agencies to use the education centers. "The kiosks are meant to provide our customers with information about environmental stewardship activities in Wake County, including waste reduction and recycling, in English and Spanish," said Marshall Parrish, Wake County Solid Waste Management Education Specialist. "We know that more Spanish-speaking residents are using our facilities, so we want the kiosks to be user-friendly to everyone."
The kiosks not only educate individuals about recycling but demonstrate the three-cycle recycling loop: collecting material, remanufacturing material and buying products with recycled content. The kiosks were constructed with as much recycled content material as possible, including plastic lumber, recycled steel for the frame and recycled tires as the bulletin board surface.
"Wake County will also use the kiosks to publicize annual recycling programs such as the telephone book recycling program or Holiday Wrap-Up," Parrish said. Space has also been allotted to announce other environmental events and programs being conducted by Wake County.
All businesses and residents are encouraged to use the Multi-Material Recycling Facilities to recycle the following items: appliances, cardboard, chipboard, lead-acid batteries, motor oil, scrap metal, tires and telephone books. Computers, drywall and pallets are also accepted at the North Wake Facility.
Regular residential recyclables can be taken to either the convenience centers or school igloo sites. For more information call 856-6186.
