NC State Stadium Recycling

7/31/2003

N.C. State University landed one of three new Wake County Solid Waste Reduction Grants to implement a recycling program at Carter-Finley Stadium. A total of $8,000 was awarded to N.C. State, Stalvey Enterprises and Urban Ministries to support recycling markets, which provide the infrastructure for the collection, processing and sale of recycled material.

"This funding helps get new programs off the ground," said Jim Reynolds, Wake County Solid Waste Director, "and N.C. State's project has a lot of potential."

The University plans to use mobile trucks called "Chuck Wagons," after football coach Chuck Amato, to collect recyclables from tailgaters in the parking lot. Reported data indicates that as much as 2-3 tons could be recycled at each game.

Paul Mobley, the N.C. State sophomore who came up with the recycling idea, hopes that the Carter-Finley recycling program will spark friendly competition between area universities to win the coveted "Aluminum Bowl" by recycling the most cans.

The other summer grant winners are:

  • Stalvey Enterprises in Holly Springs will be using grant funds to offset the cost of purchasing and installing a furnace that runs on recycled motor oil.
  • Urban Ministries in Raleigh received grant funds to compost non-edible food waste from their food pantry.

Wake County waste reduction grant recipients are selected for innovative recycling programs that promise significant benefits and could be easily adopted by other businesses.
