Storm Debris Pickup

Wake County has contracted with Phillips and Jordan, Inc., for one final round of roadside collection of tree debris from the December ice storm, to ensure that all residents have received service and clean up any remaining debris along roadsides. Storm debris collection services will be performed during the month of August, and the County is asking residents to register for service via voice mail by calling 856-5700 between July 18 - 31. Residents are asked to state their name, address with ZIP code and telephone number if they have storm debris that has not yet been collected from their roadside.
City workers and State contractors have been combing Wake County roads almost continuously since the December 4 storm, but some areas were still left out.
"We know a few rural road segments in unincorporated areas and donut holes within municipal limits have been missed in the cleanup," said Deputy County Manager Joe Durham, "but the County decided to wait until the State completed its work so that we would be sure to get the remainder of the debris."
A change in State policy prevented the State Department of Transportation from servicing all Wake roadways after the ice storm as they have in past disasters, such as Hurricane Fran. Even though North Carolina counties are not responsible for roadway cleanup, Wake County is stepping in to provide the needed services. The Solid Waste Management Division's newest 10-Year Plan includes a revised disaster debris management system, and the County has initiated work with municipalities and state agencies to improve debris collection service in the future.
