Veterans to Receive Support, Recognition at Annual Stand Down Event

On Nov. 2, veterans from across Wake County will receive recognition and support during the 12th annual Capital Area Veterans Stand Down. The yearly event provides assistance to those who have served our nation as they work to achieve stability in their lives.

This year’s event will happen Friday, Nov. 2 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Wilmington Street Center, at 1420 S. Wilmington St. in Raleigh. It opens with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. All veterans are welcome to this free event.

The Stand Down provides veterans a hand up, not a handout, by bringing together a variety of service providers to connect veterans with health care referrals and information on Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.

Veterans can also receive consultation on a variety of topics including legal education, mental health, substance abuse counsel, spiritual guidance, employment help and housing assistance.

Those participating will receive a full breakfast and lunch, as well as access to showers, laundry machines, hygiene products and clothing. Haircuts will be given, and a dental clinic will be on site. Participants will also be eligible for raffle drawings.

Many local agencies are coming together to make this event possible, including Wake County Human Services, Wake County Veterans Services, the N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs, N.C. Division of Workforce Solutions, the Durham VA Medical Center, Consumer Education Service Inc, the Raleigh Vet Center, Volunteers of America, Passage Home, Legal Aid of North Carolina, St. John the Merciful Outreach Ministries, Raleigh/Wake Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness, UCB BioSciences, Inc and BB&T.

Members of the media are welcome and encouraged to attend the event.
