Wake County Board of Commissioners Elects Chair, Vice Chair

Each will serve a one-year term in these leadership roles

The Wake County Board of Commissioners elected its top leaders for the year ahead during its regular meeting tonight, Monday, Dec. 3. The commissioners selected Jessica Holmes as chair and Greg Ford as vice chair. The votes came after all seven board members took their oath of office to officially begin their terms.

“I’m proud to lead this dedicated team of people who work hard every day to make a difference in their community,” said Chair Holmes. “Over the coming year, I look forward to making even greater strides in important areas such as affordable housing, education, behavioral health, and social and economic vitality.”

Chair Holmes was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2014. Vice Chair Ford joined the board in 2016. Each will serve a one-year term in these new leadership roles.

The commission is made up of seven members elected by voters countywide. The board members enact policies such as the regulation of land use and zoning outside municipal jurisdictions, establishment of the property tax rate and adoption of the annual budget.

The board also sets strategic goals and objectives to help guide the county’s funding decisions, project prioritization and resource usage. The goals currently include: Community Health; Economic Strength; Education; Great Government; Growth and Sustainability; Public Safety; and Social and Economic Vitality.
