Raleigh, NC - Charles P. Gilliam, Wake County Register of Deeds, released the following statement in response to recent matters in the media and in particular the article “Amid Register of Deeds scandal, some Wake leaders unhappy with county manager’s  response”, published  in the internet edition of The News and Observer on August 3, 2017.
“In regards to published concerns of some Wake County Commissioners that their questions are not being answered:  I have never been contacted by any county commissioner concerning any matter pertaining to the register of deeds office. I know many of the answers to some of their questions that are being vetted in the media, and in some cases, I am the only person who would know the complete answer. I am happy to discuss the register of deeds office with any county commissioner who would wish to do so. We are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and it is my intent to continue to cooperate to the fullest extent so there will be trust in the Wake County Register of Deeds office.”
Mr. Gilliam continued, “The cash handling controls that were swiftly implemented under new management of the register of deeds office are quite secure and consistent and are being strongly enforced.  Our policy is stricter than the policy that prevails in the rest of Wake County Government. I am happy to demonstrate this to any county commissioner who wishes to learn about it. I will provide the citizens of Wake County with further information shortly.”
