Wake County invites families to the Longleaf Festival, a free event about the importance of the longleaf pine ecosystem, on Saturday, April 13, 2013, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill.
"Participants will learn how fire plays an important role in the survival of the longleaf pine," said Assistant Park Manager Jackie Trickel. "This event is a neat way to experience the longleaf forest ecosystem first hand on our hayride through the forest."
The N.C. Forest Service will have a bulldozer, pumper unit and other tools of the trade on display in the forest. Local experts with educational exhibits, live animals, a scavenger hunt for the kids, an obstacle course, and entertainment are among other activities at the event.
Food vendors will be on site, so plan to stay for lunch. This event takes place rain or shine.
