Historic Yates Mill County Park to Hold Harvest Festival Saturday

Wake County's Historic Yates Mill County Park invites you to usher in the fall season at its 11th annual Fall Harvest Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The free event will feature harvest-related demonstrations, including corn-grinding and soap-making workshops. There will be hands-on activities for the entire family, plus a variety of community displays, storytellers, games and more. Families can also enjoy looking at antique farm equipment and tractors, listening to live music, and participating in harvest-time singing and dancing.

While at the park, tour Historic Yates Mill, Wake County's last operable water-powered gristmill. Costumed interpreters will lead half-hour tours and conduct corn-grinding demonstrations. Tours are $5 per adult, $4 for seniors (60+) and $3 for students (7-16).  Children age 6 years old and under are free.

Attendees are encouraged to sample foods made from the corn and other agricultural products. Volunteers from the non-profit group Yates Mill Associates will sell Yates Mill stone-ground cornmeal, mill merchandise and donated handmade crafts. All proceeds will support the mill's ongoing operation and maintenance.

If cool treats are more your taste, you can purchase NC State University Howling Cow ice cream at any time during the event.

The Fall Harvest Celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, located at 4620 Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh. For additional information, visit Historic Yates Mill's website or call 919-856-6675.
