Scholarships Available for 2016 Resources Conservation Workshop

Wake County high school students interested in learning about natural resource conservation this summer can now apply to attend the 2016 Resource Conservation Workshop. To help as many students participate as possible, Wake County's Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors is offering full scholarships for the week-long workshop.

"Students tell us every year that the Resource Conservation Workshop was the highlight of their summer," said Wake Soil and Water District Director Dale Threatt-Taylor. "Many go on to pursue careers in an environmental field, which encourages us to continue providing this wonderful learning opportunity to as many young people as possible."

Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to apply for a $475 scholarship to attend the workshop, which takes place from Sunday, June 26, to Friday, July 1, at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 4.

The week-long workshop introduces teens to various fields of natural resources management, such as soil and water conservation, forestry, water quality and wildlife. Space is limited, and applications are highly competitive.

The board awarded three scholarships for last summer's workshop, and the Friends of Wake Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored a fourth scholarship.

To request a scholarship application or sponsor a deserving Wake County teen to attend conservation camp, call the Wake Soil and Water Conservation District at 919-250-1065 or email District Education Specialist Sheila Jones at sbjones@wakegov.com.

The Resource Conservation Workshop is sponsored by the N.C. Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in conjunction with the N.C. Division of Soil and Water Conservation, N.C. State University Soil Science Department, and the Soil and Water Conservation Society Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter.
