Red Cross Opens Shelter at Apex United Methodist Church, Sanderson High School Shelter to Close

To address the ongoing need to provide shelter to Wake County residents still in need of assistance after the winter storm, the American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St., in Apex.

The shelter that was opened at Sanderson High School to assist those affected by the winter storm is expected to close as of 2 p.m., TODAY, Sunday, January 24, 2016. Evacuees currently at the Sanderson location will have the option to either be relocated to the Apex shelter or back to their homes. Transportation from the shelter has been arranged for those whose power was restored overnight.

Over the last 12 hours, the number of people who were using the shelter decreased as the number of power outages also decreased across Wake County.

At this time, the Wake County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will remain at activation level three. This means that the EOC is staffed on a continual basis and equipment and personnel are responding as needed. Residents can call 919-856-7044 for non-emergency purposes. In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1. For an update on road conditions, call 5-1-1.
