Public Invited to Tour South Wake Landfill

Wake County Solid Waste Management is providing tours of the South Wake Landfill, located at 6160 Old Smithfield Road in Apex, on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Tours are available that day on a first-come, first-served basis at the following times:

  • 9:30–10:30 a.m.;
  • 11 a.m.–noon;

  • 2:30–3:30 p.m.

The free tour gives participants the opportunity to see firsthand what happens to their garbage, where they can recycle everyday items that are too large to collect at the curb, and how to safely dispose of hazardous items. Participants will also learn how Wake County is leading the state in modern waste management practices by recycling hazardous household items and turning household garbage into landfill gas, a renewable energy source.

In addition to touring the South Wake Landfill, participants will get to ride through the Multi-Material Recycling Drop-off Facility, Convenience Center, Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Facility and Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility.

Tours are open to Wake County residents ages 8 years or older and last approximately one hour. Participants are required to ride in a multi-passenger vehicle around the more than 750-acre facility. Space on the tours is limited to 23 participants per session, and advance registration is required.
