Veterans Event to Provide Assistance

Wake County and partners will host the 9th Annual Capital Area Veterans Stand Down on Friday, October 16, 2015, at the South Wilmington Street Center, 1420 S. Wilmington St. in Raleigh, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 200 veterans are expected to attend.

The event, led by the grass-roots intervention program The Stand Down, connects local veterans with services such as housing and employment assistance, healthcare and much more.

"The Veterans Stand Down is seen as a best practice across the country for reaching homeless veterans,” said South Wilmington Street Center Manager Frank Lawrence. "The Stand Down provides an opportunity for homeless veterans to access services in one location that is familiar to them and easy to access."

A full breakfast and lunch will be served, and shower and laundry facilities will be available. Veterans will also have the opportunity to meet with various service organizations, including Veterans Affairs and Veterans Services Officers.

The Capital Area Vets Stand Down is sponsored by Wake County Human Services, Wake Community Services, NC Department of Commerce Division of Workforce Solutions, Raleigh Vet Center, the Durham VA Medical Center, CASA and Passage Home.
