Board Approves 2014 Focus Areas, Goals and Objectives

The Wake County Board of Commissioners (BOC) adopted its goals and objectives for 2014 during its regularly scheduled meeting, Monday, March 17, 2014. The goals are within six strategic focus areas:

  • Fiscal Strength and Stewardship
  • Community Health and Vitality
  • Education
  • Public Safety
  • Community Partnerships and Economic Development
  • Effective Government Operations

“The most important objective underlying each of our goals is cultivating a thriving Wake County,” said Board of Commissioners chair Phil Matthews. “What allows us to continue growing is the depth of dedication to greatness – not only from the local government, but also the network of partnerships throughout our community. Good relationships are fundamental to a prosperous future.”

Each of the six strategic focus areas has long term goals and specific objectives for calendar year 2014. In all there are 22 objectives for 2014. Among the highest priorities are:

  • Implement an inter-local agreement with the Wake County Board of Education for collaboration between School Board and County staff to ensure public funds are utilized optimally for the school building program site acquisition and construction services. (The agreement was approved earlier in today’s meeting.)
  • Support community discussion and development of transit strategies that evaluate investment alternatives, feasibility and governance.
  • Work with leaders in the private and public sectors to organize and implement the Healthiest Capital County Initiative in order to build opportunities for healthy lifestyles and better health outcomes for all Wake County residents.
  • Develop and implement a county-wide, citizen-focused strategic plan to achieve a long-term shared vision for the County that will support a high quality of life for all Wake County citizens.

Staff presented proposed goals at the Board of Commissioners’ planning retreat, held on Friday, February 28, 2014. The Commissioners used the information to develop the 2014 goals.
