Board Elects New Chair, Vice Chair
The Wake County Board of Commissioners, at its regular meeting Monday, December 2, 2013, elected Phil Matthews as its new chair and Tony Gurley as vice chair, each for a one-year term and effective immediately. The chair presides over Board meetings and represents the County in an official capacity at community, business and other functions.

"The Board of Commissioners has made tremendous strides toward its goals in 2013, thanks in large part to the leadership of Joe Bryan," Matthews said. "And, there is much more to do. I look forward to working with all of the County Commissioners to set goals for 2014 and spending more time on our focus areas – education, the economy and job investments, and public safety."

Matthews was first elected to the Board in 2010. This is the first time that Matthews has been elected chair. Gurley was elected to the Board in 2002, re-elected in 2006 and 2010. Gurley served as vice chair in 2005 and chair in 2006, 2007 and 2010.
