It’s officially October, and nothing says Howl-oween like adorable dogs looking absolutely fetching in cute and creepy costumes.

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and National Pit Bull Awareness Month, and the Wake County Animal Center is combining the two into a month-long adoption special. All October, you can adopt any pit-bull type dog, including pit mixes, for $25, down from the usual price of $95.

Unfortunately, there are many myths and misconceptions about pit bulls that make it hard for them to find homes, said Dr. Jennifer Federico, director of the Wake County Animal Center.

“Too many people write off pit bulls when they’re looking to adopt, but it’s really wrong to generalize about an entire breed,” Federico said. “Just like people, every dog is an individual and has his or her own unique personality. I have four pit bulls, and they are absolute sweethearts.”

There are currently 39 pit bulls at the shelter and 10 in foster homes that are available for adoption. Each year, pits and pit mixes account for 30% of the animals admitted to the Wake County Animal Center.
