Last week, pets from the Wake County Animal Center looked for love with valentines cards posted to social media, and the community responded with an outpouring of compassion that produced more than 60 adoptions.

From Stanley the pit bull, who thinks you’re adora-bull, to Kirk the housecat, who knows love is a fur-letter word, these creature cupids weren’t afraid to use a little wordplay to melt hearts. View a gallery of full-resolution valentines from these cordial cats and canine cupids.

In total, 45 dogs and 16 cats found their homes during the weeklong Valentine’s adoption special at the Wake County Animal Center. That’s up 80 percent from last year, when 34 animals were adopted.

“We can’t say, ‘thank you,’ enough to everyone who stepped up and opened their hearts and homes to new pets this Valentine’s Day,” said Dr. Jennifer Federico, director of the Wake County Animal Center. “Valentine’s Day may only come once a year, but this outpouring of compassion will have these animals feeling the love all year round.”

Even if you missed the adoption special, it’s never too late to add a little love to your life with an adoption from the Wake County Animal Center. View a gallery of the animals currently available for adoption.
