The event will celebrate Harris Lake County Park’s rich history, while showcasing all that it has to offer to the citizens of Wake County. The event is free.

Park History

In 1985, Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space signed a lease with Progress Energy for a 680-acre regional park facility on Harris Lake. Park construction began in 1997 and the park opened in 1999.

The land was once home to a small community of farms and home sites, some residing in the area since the 1700s. Remnants from the home sites can still be seen along the park trails. During previous generations, agriculture was a way of life for the families living in the Harris Lake area. Residents raised livestock and grew cotton, tobacco, peanuts and sweet potatoes. Sugar caning was a popular activity, to produce molasses. Occasionally, the families would sell their goods at the City Market in Downtown Raleigh.
