FEATURE: Storytelling Festival, Bugs and Take A Child Outside Week at Wake County Parks in September

Wake County Parks is participating in Take A Child Outside Week (TACO), September 24-30, 2009, by offering outdoor programs at all of its parks. In honor of this important week, many program fees have been waived.
TACO is a program developed by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to get children outdoors to discover the natural world around them. For special events at Wake County parks visit, www.wakegov.com/parks.
Saturday, September 12, 2-3 p.m. – Trees and Their Leaves
Identify common woodland trees by looking at leaves near the American Tobacco Trail. Children and adults will examine leaf parts, learn what they do for trees and make a leaf print craft. Meet at the White Oak Church Parking lot. Admission is $3 per person/$5 per family. For information, call 387-2117. The American Tobacco Trail is located at 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill.
Saturday, September 12, 1-2:30 p.m. – Nature’s Surprises
Nature is full of surprises. Families are invited to look for little things that usually go unnoticed at Crowder District Park as they hike along the trail. Meet at the Amphitheater. The program is open to all ages. Admission is $3 per person/$5 per family. For information, call 662-2850. Crowder District Park is located at 4709 Ten-Ten Road, Apex.
Saturday, September 19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. – From Field to Food: A Harvest Celebration
Celebrate the fall by participating in the From Field to Food celebration at Historic Yates Mill County Park. The event will feature harvest-related demonstrations, contests and hands-on activities for the entire family. Activities include wheat straw weaving, corn shuck doll-making, corn-shucking and cob-throwing contests, children’s storytelling, dance performances and live old-time music. Sunday, September 20, 1-3 p.m. – Get Your Bearings
Leave the GPS at home and learn how to navigate using a compass and a map at Lake Crabtree County Park. The program will include instructions for basics orienteering, such as reading bearings, topo maps and more. Participants will use their new skills to treasure hunt around the park. Wednesday, September 23, 2-3 p.m. – Buggin’ Out
What is a bug? Kids of all ages are invited to learn the answer to this and many more questions as they explore the world of bugs and insects at Harris Lake County Park. Participants will use nets to collect insects for closer inspection and play an insect scavenger hunt game in the garden. Meet at the Cypress Shelter. For information, call 387-4342. Saturday, September 26, 2-5 p.m. – Storytelling Festival
Enjoy fascinating tales shared by professional storytellers during the annual Storytelling Festival. Storytellers from around the country will entertain visitors with tall tales. As listeners travel through the park they will hear historical yarns, legends, folk tales, ghost stories and much more. Food will be available for sale. Families are encouraged to bring blankets, cushions or chairs. For information, call 250-1013. Historic Oak View County Park is located at 4028 Carya Drive, Raleigh.
