NEWS: Tree-Ring Circus, Bird Counting and Open House Celebration at Wake County Parks in February

Wednesday, February 4, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. – Story time for Tots
Children and parents are invited to discover nature at Lake Crabtree County Park with a story, hands-on outdoor exploration, and a fun activity or craft to take home. Come prepared to actively participate with your child. This event takes place the first Wednesday of each month, meet at the White Oak Shelter. Admission is $4 per child or sign up for three events for $10. Pre-registration is required. For information, call 460-3390. Saturday, February 7, 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. – Nature Exploration
Join the Historic Yates Mill County Park naturalist and venture into the park to hear stories about animals and how they survive the winter. Meet at the Finley Center Auditorium, prepared to go outside. This program is free, but pre-registration is required. Limit: 20 participants ages 6 and above. For information, call 856-6675. Saturday, February 7, 2009, 1:00 p.m. – Historic Oak View Film Series
Historic Oak View will sponsor a film series in the Farm History Center showcasing farm-themed movies. Free refreshments will be served. After each movie, there will be a guided tour of the exhibit, Farm Life: A Century of Change for Farm Families and their Neighbors. Movies will be shown beginning at 1:00 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of February.

Visit the Blue Jay Center for Environmental Education and learn about Water Wonders. The Winter Open House will include crafts, interactive displays, hands-on educational activities and presentations. Cider and cookies will be provided. This event is free to the entire family. Saturday, February 14, 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. – 12th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count
Families are invited to join Lake Crabtree County Park staff as they walk through several habitats to identify and count birds. Be sure to bring binoculars (there is a limited supply of binoculars on-hand). All data collected will be entered into the national county database. No registration is required. Monday, February 16, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. – Tree-ring Circus
Children ages 9 to 12 are invited to take part in the day-long Tree-ring Circus workshop at Blue Jay Point County Park, focusing on the mysteries of tree rings. The day will include photosynthesis tag, solving the clues of winter tree identification and exploring historic uses of trees, including primitive fire-building techniques. The workshop fee of $30 includes snacks, activities and staff supervision. Participants should bring a bag lunch. This program takes place on a traditional calendar teacher workday and Track 2 track-out. For additional information, call 870-4330.
