1/13/2009

The Wake County Board of Commissioners approved $813,283 in additional funding to the Crisis Intervention Program, which provides emergency heating assistance to low-income households, during its regular meeting Monday, January 12, 2009. The approval is the County’s fifth crisis intervention allocation, totaling more than $2 million and surpassing the established budget of $1.24 million for the current, fiscal year. The federal government will reimburse the County for the program.

Wake County residents may apply for heating assistance through the Crisis Intervention Program. To schedule an appointment, call 919-212-7000. Appointments will be scheduled one week out for households facing disconnection within five days. Walk-in appointments will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis for households facing same-day disconnection service. To qualify, families must have an income at or below 150 percent of the poverty level.

Each year, Congress prepares a budget of emergency allotments for states based on weather-related needs. North Carolina has received these funds for winter heating, summer cooling or hurricane-related needs in the past. These funds are sent to their respective counties as an additional crisis interventions allocation.
