FEATURE: Hopping with Frogs, Protecting Our Waterways and Songbirds at Wake County Parks in April

Saturday, April 4, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. – Frog Festival
Leap over to Crowder District Park for the 10th Annual Frog Fest and celebrate the abundance of frogs at Crowder, and learn how important water quality is to them. There will be fun, educational activities for the whole family – games, crafts, live animals, entertainment and exhibits from local environmental agencies and organizations. All events at Frog Fest are free of charge. Food will be available to purchase. Park at Cary Alliance Church, 4108 Ten-Ten Road, Apex, just west of the intersection of Holly Springs Road and Ten-Ten Road in Apex, and ride the free shuttle. For information, call 662-2850. Thursday, April 9, 10-11 a.m. – Trail Tales
Enjoy story time at the American Tobacco Trail by taking part in Trail Tales. Stories focus on animals that live near the trail. This month’s story explores a day in the life of a frog, and the dangers and adventures frogs encounter. Participants will create frog calling kits. Bring a blanket and strollers. The program is designed for children up to the age of 8. Admission is $3 per child with parent or $5 per family. Meet at the New Hill-Olive Chapel Road parking area. For information, call 387-2117. Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m.-noon – Spring Big Sweep
Give back to the community during the annual Spring Big Sweep at Lake Crabtree County Park. Gloves, bags and other supplies will be provided. Individuals and groups are welcome. Patches are available for Scouts. Volunteers are asked to meet at the boat rental complex. For information or to sign-up, call 460-2723. Lake Crabtree County Park is located at 1400 Aviation Parkway in Morrisville.

Saturday, April 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. – Earth Day the Historical Way
Learn how our forefathers used renewable energy before modern technology. Find out how the waterwheel operates at Historic Yates Mill County Park and about the millpond’s watershed. Plant a native tree in the park and make an Earth bracelet to take home. For information, call 856-6675. Historic Yates Mill County Park is located at 4820 Lake Wheeler Road in Raleigh.

Saturday, April 25, 2009, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. – Songbirds
The Songbird Celebration is an annual event at Blue Jay Point County Park celebrating the return of migratory songbirds and honoring of International Migratory Bird Day. Participants will enjoy bird-related activities throughout the park, including games and crafts, preschool story times, classes for adults and kids, bird watching and more.
