Wake Guide to Help New and Moving Pet Owners

4/9/2008

The Wake County Animal Center and the Wake Animal Advocates Group today announced the development of a Wake County Pet-Friendly Housing Guide. The guide provides information on more than 200 apartments in Wake County that accept dogs, cats and other pets. The guide also includes details such as pet fees and weight, and breed restrictions.

“Hundreds of dogs and cats come to the Wake County Animal Center each year because of housing problems,” said Michael Williams, director of the Wake County Animal Center. “A lot of times people find a new apartment or move without thoroughly considering the impact it will have on their pets. This guide puts all the pertinent information in one place and into the hands of pet owners.”

According to the National Humane Education Society, “moving” and “landlord not allowing pet” are the top two reasons for owner relinquishment of dogs and cats to animal shelters in the U.S.

The primary purpose of the Wake County Pet-Friendly Housing Guide is to help decrease the number of pets relinquished in Wake County, due to moving and conflicts with housing policies. Citizens are encouraged to consult the guide if they are planning to move with a pet, or planning to adopt a pet.

The guide is available at the Wake County Animal Center, 820 Beacon Lake Road in Raleigh, selected veterinarian offices and online at www.wakegov.com/pets/guide.
