FEATURE: Green Corn, Canoe Tour and Longleaf Festival at Wake County Parks in August

Wednesday, August 5, 10-11 a.m. – Story Time for Tots
Parents and children are invited to meet at the White Oak Shelter at Lake Crabtree County Park to hear a story about "Morris Mouse," followed by an outdoor, hands-on nature exploration. The program will end with a fun activity or craft to take home. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children. Saturday, August 15, 10 a.m-4 p.m. – Green Corn Festival
Come and enjoy the Green Corn Festival at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Historically, the festival was celebrated by a variety of Native American groups in the late summer to early fall when corn was ripening on the stalk. Enjoy storytelling, games and other activities, and then sink your teeth into some roasted sweet corn. For information, call 856-6675. Saturday, August 22, 9-11 a.m. – Canoeing Lake Crabtree
Join park staff for a canoe tour of Lake Crabtree. Learn basic paddling techniques, while looking for birds and other wildlife along the shore. If time allows, boaters will explore Crabtree Creek, and look for signs of beavers and other lake residents. The cost is $5 per adult or $10 per canoe (three people allowed per boat). Saturday, August 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. – Longleaf Festival
Learn about the history and importance of the Longleaf Pine tree species in North Carolina by attending Harris Lake County Park’s inaugural festival. Tour the park’s 64-acre Longleaf Pine restoration area. View craft demonstrations, enjoy games and listen to live music. For information, call 387-4342. Saturday, August 29, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. – Mill Interpreter Training
Are you interested in leading guided tours at Historic Yates Mill County Park? If so, join park staff for a day of hands-on training held in the park center and in the old mill. This program is required for volunteers who wish to become mill interpreters. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is required. For information, call 856-6675. Sunday, August 30, 1-3 p.m. – Cornmeal Cooking
Do you enjoy tasty cornbread that holds together well? Explore some of the food chemistry at work by attending a cooking workshop at Historic Yates Mill County Park. This basic cornmeal baking class focuses on the ingredients and techniques used to make delicious, quick cornbread. The class will take place in the park center auditorium and kitchen.

All participants will be able to sample their creations at the end of the class. Pre-registration is required. The event is open to anyone age 16 and up and there is a fee of $10 per participant.
