UNC-TV Series to Feature Historic Yates Mill, Staff
2/12/2008
Wake County’s Historic Yates Mill Park will be featured on UNC-TV’s Exploring North Carolina series in February. "Fords and Mills," will air on February 14, 2008, at 8:30 p.m., February 15, 2008, at 9:30 p.m., and February 17, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. The episode will examine the social impact, geology, and geography of ancient river crossings and mill sites across North Carolina. Nearly half the episode is dedicated to Yates Mill.
Historic Yates Mill County Park features the only remaining gristmill in Wake County. The old mill on Steep Hill Creek, now known as Yates Mill, was established in the 1750s. During this period, mills, powered by moving power, were essential to the economy of growing cities and frequently dictated the location of cities and towns.
As part of the "Ford and Mills" episode of Exploring North Carolina, Yates Mill staff explore the role of the mill as a community hub and a manufacturer during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The program also explains the impact of fords and ferries, river crossings, on early transportation and the relationship between these crossings and mill sites.
