Wake Homeless Programs Awarded $1.7 Million
2/7/2008
Wake County Human Services has been awarded $1,769,543 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to fund three projects geared toward helping homeless citizens. The funding will come to the County via the Wake Continuum of Care, a local group of agencies that serve the homeless. Wake Continuum of Care received $2,366,654 as part of HUD’s 2007 Homeless Assistance Grant program.
"Many of the citizens this grant will allow us to help have lived on the streets for years," said David Harris, Wake County Director of Supported Housing and Homeless Services. "It's great to see them moving into their new homes and taking charge of their lives."
The funds will be distributed among three projects:
- New Shelter Plus Care, a rental subsidy program for homeless persons with disabilities, over one year.
- Existing Shelter Plus Care, rental subsidy program for chronically homeless adults with disabilities over five years.
- Existing Community Outreach Team, providing services to homeless persons with disabilities, over two years.
