FEATURE: Wake County Names New Community Health Director

Sue Lynn Ledford has been appointed as Wake County’s new Community Health Director, effective August 10, 2009. Ledford previously served as the Safe School & Healthy Students project director for the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) in Murphy, N.C. She will replace Gibbie Harris, who currently serves as Buncombe County’s Health Director.
"Ms. Ledford brings a wealth of experience to this position. We are sure that her expertise and leadership will benefit Wake County residents in a number of ways," said Wake Human Services Director Ramon Rojano.
In the past 12 years with the CCSD, Ledford developed and managed programs to improve the health of students in her district. She was responsible for facilitating a collaborative effort between community, school and state agencies. Ledford is also credited with developing a Safe Schools Plan for the district, which included a communicable disease plan, disaster plan, anti-bullying guidelines and sanitation standards.
Ledford earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a master’s in Public Administration from Western Carolina University. She received National Board Certification in School Nursing in 1998.
Her professional memberships and activities include the N.C. Smart Start Board of Directors, president of the N.C. School Nurse Executive Board, National Association of Nurses, and the Cherokee County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Ledford is currently president of the School Nurse Association of North Carolina.
