The Fuquay-Varina Library, 133 S. Fuquay Ave., Fuquay-Varina, is now home to a rare Thrianta (Tree-an-ta) rabbit. In celebration of the newest addition, the library is having a naming contest through the end of January.

Citizens are invited to think of a name for the male rabbit and submit it, along with your contact information to lmcconnell@co.wake.nc.us, or drop by to see the bunny and place your suggestion in the box. The winner will be announced by Valentine’s Day 2009.

The Thrianta originated in the Netherlands and was accepted by the American Rabbit Breeder’s Association in 2006. The beautiful orange-red breed is known for its curious, gentle and social nature. The new mascot is enjoying a luxury rabbit habitat donated by the Fuquay-Varina Woman's Club.

The Thrianta is not the first rabbit to live at the Fuquay-Varina Library. The tradition of having a rabbit in residence began in 1996. The library’s first mascot was a gray, miniature Rex named Cloud. The second was a tiny dwarf bunny named Flash, who passed away in April of last year.

Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For additional information, contact a library staff member at 919-557-2788.
