NEWS: Job Searching, Essay Contest, Classic Children's Films at Wake County Libraries in the Month of February

Monday, February 2, noon-2 p.m. – Ask the Gardener
Wake County gardeners are invited to "Ask the Gardener" with the co-author of Best Garden Plants for North Carolina, Pam Beck, at the Electronic Information Center. This casual question-and-answer session will appeal to gardeners of all levels of expertise, as Pam will answer your gardening questions while attendees have access to the library’s collection of gardening books.

The Electronic Information Center is inside the Wake County Office Building on the corner of Fayetteville and Davie streets, directly beside the Wake County Courthouse. Registration is not required. For more information, call 919-856-6698.

Wednesday, February 11, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. – Employment Search
The Joblink Career Center is conducting workshops at the Electronic Information Center for those looking to find a job or change careers. Attendees will learn how to avoid employment barriers, update and improve resumes, and receive tips for job hunting in the Triangle. Friday, February 13 – "I Have a Dream" Essay Contest
Civil Rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. achieved great things for America in his lifetime. His legacy lives on through speeches and presentations such as the famous, " I Have a Dream" speech delivered at the March on Washington in 1963. Cameron Village Regional Library invites students to read the speech in the library, online or watch it on the NCLive streaming video link, then choose from one of the essay assignments available at the library’s reference area to write a 2-4-page essay and be eligible for prizes.

The deadline to turn in the essays is Friday, February 13, 2009. Winners will be announced Friday, February 20, and the essays will be read Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 7 p.m. For further information, call 919-856-6710 or e-mail jr.rogers@co.wake.nc.us. Thursday, February 19, 2-3 p.m. – Story time at Marbles
Parents and kids are invited to story time at the Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. After story time, enjoy free admission to the museum. The event takes place the third Thursday of every month. There are limited passes for each story time, so stop by the Electronic Information Center, 336 Fayetteville St., Raleigh, and pick up your vouchers today. Vouchers are only available at the E.I.C. Friday, February 20, 6:30 p.m. – Game Fun
Tired of the same old Friday night? Come take part in Game and Trivia night at West Regional Library. Ages 8 and up are invited to compete against others in your favorite board games or trivia. Video games will be available, as well. For information, call 919-463-8500. West Regional Library is located at 4000 Louis Stephens Drive, Cary.

Saturday, February 21, 2:30 p.m. – Learn to knit
If you’ve ever wanted to make a sweater or create beautiful blankets, then come and learn how to knit at a class at Cary Branch Library. The class is designed to help novice knitters improve their skills. The class is open to students ages 10 to 18. Sign up at the library or call 919-460-3350. Cary Branch Library is located at 310 Academy St., Cary.

Saturday, February 21, 2:30-3:30 p.m. – Children’s Classics
Come enjoy educational films on 16mm film at West Regional Library. A.V. Geeks is an independent movie company based out Raleigh with an archive of more than 20,000 16mm educational films. Join them for this special occasion as they present classic children's stories that have been adapted to film throughout the years. For more information call 919-463-8500. Registration not required.
