NEWS: Wake Area Business Advisory Council Hosts Wake EITC Coalition
1/16/2009
The Wake Area Business Advisory Council (BAC) will meet Thursday, January 22, 2009, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., at the Wake County Human Services Building, 220 Swinburne Street, Room 2149, Raleigh. Local business professionals, human resources leaders and workforce development professionals are invited to attend BAC meetings.
The January BAC meeting will feature Lorraine McCurdy, program manager with the Family Resource Center of Raleigh. McCurdy will provide valuable information to help business representatives, employment counselors and others understand how Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites and Earned Income Tax Credits can impact the local economy.
VITA sites help people earning less than $42,000 fill out their tax forms electronically. Taking advantage of this free service can keep more money in individuals’ pockets by cutting down on expensive fees such as those charged for electronic filing or refund anticipation loans. Refunds averaged $1,800 last year and there are currently a high percentage of eligible taxpayers not using this service.
"Helping businesses and agencies increase their knowledge and increase their referrals to VITA sites is critical in today’s economy," stated John O’Connor, BAC program chair and president of Career Pro Inc.
Membership is not required and new visitors may attend at no charge. To RSVP, please call 919-212-7594 or e-mail janny.flynt@co.wake.nc.us.
The BAC is a Wake County Human Services initiative and was established in January 1997 to promote a partnership between local businesses/employers and employment and training programs in the Wake County area.
