FEATURE: Wake Conducts South Wake Landfill Tours on April 25

In recognition of Earth Day, Wake County citizens are invited to attend a free, 45-minute tour of the South Wake Solid Waste Management Facility, 6130 Old Smithfield Road, Apex, on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Visitors will learn about the County’s recycling and disposal opportunities, what happens to items after they are collected and how some items can be generated into alternative energy sources. Tours can accommodate up to 15 people and will start on the hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tours are available with English and Spanish speaking tour guides.
Employees from the County’s Environmental Services Department will conduct the tours and educate participants on the recycling and disposal processes at the following facilities:
· Citizen Convenience Center
· Household Hazardous Waste Facility
· Multi-Material Recycling Facility
· Oyster Shell Recycling Site
· Feltonsville Landfill
· South Wake Landfill
Reservations can be made by calling 856-6006, e-mailing FeedTheBin@co.wake.nc.us or online at www.wakegov.com/recycling by Friday, April 10, 2009. Citizens should request special accommodations when making the reservation, if necessary.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The County is partnering with the South Wake Landfill Citizens Committee to offer the tours to the public. The citizens’ committee connects the County with landfill neighbors, and helps County staff make non-technical decisions concerning the facility.
