Making Magic Camps Planned, Sponsors Needed

4/2/2008

Wake County needs your help to make 2008 a summer of magic for local children. The Making Magic Alliance continues to seek donations and sponsors for 2008 Making Magic Camp scholarships. A $100 donation allows one youth to attend a one-week camp of their choice at no cost to their family.

Magic Camps are funded by the Making Magic Alliance, a collaborative partnership between Wake County, the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund, local businesses and volunteers. The Alliance’s premier event, the Making Magic Motorsports Expo, is held in Raleigh each January. The 2008 Making Magic Motorsports Expo raised more than $32,000.

More than 20 community partners and providers participate in the Making Magic summer camp program. In the summer of 2007, 390 youth were placed in Magic Camps. The Making Magic Program targets children and youth who are not succeeding in school; who are less likely to come to school ready to learn; who have a higher incidence of health problems, especially obesity and diabetes; whose families are more likely to have economic challenges; and for families and children who are at greatest risk.

Students wishing to apply for summer 2008 Making Magic Camp scholarships must submit applications by April 11, 2008. For more information about Making Magic Camps, including donations and scholarship applications, please call Thomas Ray at 212-7835 or visit the Making Magic Alliance website at makingmagicalliance.org. Donations may be mailed to the Making Magic Alliance, Wake County Center, 4001-E Carya Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27610.
