Wake Parks Announce Bird Count Programs

The 11th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) will be held President’s Day weekend, Friday, February 15 – Monday, February 18, 2008, Programs will be held at Lake Crabtree County Park, 1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville and at Crowder District Park, 4709 Ten-Ten Road, Apex.

The GBBC is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Findings are reported to Cornell Lab of Ornithology and are used for research and academic studies. Below is a list of Wake County events.

Lake Crabtree County Park
1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville

GBBC Walks
Join park staff on a walk through several habitats to identify and count birds. Bring your own binoculars if you have them; meet at the aterwise Garden.
· Friday, February 15, 9 a.m. and 1 p. m.
· Saturday, February 16, 9 a. m.
· Monday, February 18, 1 p. m.

Bird Bazaar
Participate in a variety of crafts and bird-related activities. Test your bird knowledge and identification skills to win prizes; meet at the Dogwood Shelter.
· Saturday, February 16, 1-3 p. m.

Bluebird Trail Walk
Learn as you help staff monitor the bluebird population and go home with instructions to make your own bluebird nest box. Meet at the Waterwise Garden.
· Sunday, February 17, 9 a. m.

Crowder District Park
4709 Ten-Ten Road, Apex

GBBC Walks

Breakfast with the Birds
Enjoy free doughnuts and hot drinks before walking the trials to identify and count birds. For ages 8 and up; preregistration is required. Meet at the Park Pavilion.
· Saturday, February 17, 7:30-9:30 a.m.

Bluebird Trail Monitoring
Check and record any activity at more than 20 bluebird boxes along the new Bluebird Monitoring Trail. Participants will also gather data for the bird count. For all ages. Meet in the office parking lot.
· Sunday, February 18, 2-4 p. m.
