Human Capital Development Tops Wake County Commissioners' 2008 Focus Areas

2/4/2008

The Wake County Board of Commissioners held its annual planning retreat on Friday, February 1, 2008. At the retreat, which was held at N.C. State University's Wendell H. Murphy football complex, Board members identified focus areas for the development of their 2008 goals. The Board directed County staff to fully develop and refine their goal statements for each subject area and present to the Board for their consideration at their regular meeting on February 18, 2008.

Chief among the focus areas is the establishment of a Human Capital Development Initiative, a key to maintaining and building Wake County’s middle class. Water Management, Mental Health Reform and Transportation are also core components of the Commissioners’ goals.

"Friday’s retreat is another example of Wake County leaders continuing to invest in the citizens of Wake County," said Commissioners’ Chair Joe Bryan. "Our County is a wonderful place to live, and it’s our job to continue to plan for the future and work together collaboratively for the benefit of our countywide community."

On Friday, the Board agreed to focus the most attention on the following areas:

Building Human Capital
Collaborative Water Resources Management
Mental Health Reform
Support for Cultural Arts
Identify Transportation Strategies
Unified Service Delivery for Fire/Rescue and EMS
Financial Stewardship
Environmental Stewardship
Public School Financing and Construction
Gang Prevention
