Thursday, March 6, 5-6:30 p.m. – CD Swap Party
Come and share your favorite songs with others during a CD Swap Party at the Eva Perry Library. Bring in a mixed CD filled with your favorite music, make a cool case for it and swap it with someone else. Please preregister at the Youth Services desk or by calling 387-2100. Thursday, March 6, 3-4 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. – Videogame Mania
Kids ages 11 and up are invited to share their video-gaming skills by taking part in a Nintendo Wii Sports Night at the Southeast Regional Library. Play Nintendo Wii bowling, boxing, tennis and golf games on the big screen. Registration is limited to 12 people for each session. For information and to register, call 662-2250. Thursday, March 13, 7 p.m. – An Evening with Robert San Souci
Meet folk tale author Robert D. San Souci, and learn about his folk and fairy tales from around the world. Souci’s work includes such popular titles as "Cendrillon: A Caribbean Cinderella," "The Boy and the Ghost," "The Talking Eggs," "Sukey and the Mermaid," and the Caldecott Honor Book "The Faithful Friend." He also wrote the spooky "Short and Shivery" and "Dare to be Scared" series. Souci is popular with many groups for making more obscure stories accessible to young children and for featuring female and male heroes from many different places and ethnicities, with an emphasis on strong female protagonists. Thursday, March 20, 7 p.m. – Journalism and a Free Press Panel Discussion
Come and hear area journalists share their views on the significance of a free press, at the Cameron Village Regional Library. According to Benjamin Franklin, "when truth and error have fair play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter." Join a discussion of contemporary applications of Franklin’s journalistic principles. The panel will include Ted Vaden, Public Editor for The News and Observer, and Dr. Frank Fee Jr. from the UNC School of Journalism. Thursday, March 27, 7 p.m. – 7th Annual African Diaspora Film Festival
Enjoy a family night at the movies by attending the 7th Annual African Diaspora Film Festival at the Richard B. Harrison Library. KeKe Palmer, Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett star in "Akeelah and the Bee," rated PG for language. Eleven-year-old Akeelah Anderson’s life is not easy: her father is dead, her mom ignores her, and her brother runs with the rowdy crowd. Responding to a threat by her school’s principal, Akeelah participates in a spelling bee to avoid detention for her many absences. What she and her family learn in the process turns out to be the greatest prize. This event is sponsored by the Africana Studies Department at NC State University.
