4/20/2009

Wake County citizens are invited to learn about the local economic climate, the County’s budget process and federal stimulus funding through a new Web site, WakeGOV.com/economy, launched today, Monday, April 20, 2009. The Web site is designed to encourage public discussion and involvement in the budget process in unique and innovative ways.

WakeGOV.com/economy pages are designed to allow citizens to easily access information, and include:

  • Economy and Budget Home – A welcome message and links to the most recent updates to Wake County Economy
  • Watch and Learn – Video segments and interviews
  • Frequently Asked Questions – Straightforward answers about the Wake County economy and budget
  • Budget Calendar – A guide to input opportunities
  • Citizen Input – A place to submit feedback and read comments from other citizens.
  • Frequently Used Budget Terms and Phrases
  • Federal Stimulus Funding – How Wake County is using Federal Funds and links to federal programs
  • Links and Documents – Frequently requested links and public records showing recommended budget reductions, vacancy reports and more

"It is important that citizens understand that the recession is not a one year event," said Wake County Manager David Cooke. "We are all, citizens included, going to have to work together to continue to meet the needs of the County."

"It is important for everyone to understand the local economy and budget," Cooke said. "It is exciting to share this valuable information in a new way."

Frequently asked questions, with answers, on the Wake County Economy and Budget Web site will be updated regularly in response to citizen requests. Initial questions include:

  • What steps are County Commissioners and the County Manager taking to deal with the recession?
  • Is the County planning to lay-off any employees?
  • Who decides how each department’s budget will be reduced?
  • What is being done to ensure more reductions aren’t needed in the future?

Visitors can also subscribe to a new e-newsletter, Wake Economy, that will notify them of updates to the site and opportunities to become involved in the development of the County’s fiscal year 2010 budget.
