NEWS: Wake to Hold Pubilc Meeting About Groundwater Contamination at North Wake Landfill
9/4/2009
Wake County will hold a public meeting about groundwater contamination near the closed North Wake Landfill (NWLF) and corrective options on Friday, October 2, 2009, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Pullen House, 10801 Durant Road, Raleigh. The contamination, which goes beyond the property boundaries of the NWLF, was found during routine, regulatory-required groundwater monitoring for the closed, unlined portion of the NWLF. The contamination does not affect drinking water in the area.
"The purpose of this meeting is to provide citizens the opportunity to talk with County staff to review the groundwater monitoring data and discuss the different options that have been evaluated to correct the contamination," said Environmental Services Director Tommy Esqueda. "The objective is to solicit input from the community before proceeding forward with a recommended solution for the groundwater contamination."
During the public meeting, citizens can provide feedback on different options to correct the groundwater contamination and can review:
- findings of the groundwater monitoring
- corrective measures assessment
- future monitoring activities plan
- potential remedies for the contamination
- details regarding the implementation schedule for corrective measures
Staff and other experts will be on hand to answer questions.
The findings, corrective options, frequently asked questions and other documents related to the North Wake groundwater contamination can be found online. The assessment report is also available for citizen review at the North Wake Office, 9025 Deponie Road, Raleigh.
