FEATURE: Jog for a Cause, Outfox Foxes and Grind Corn at Wake County Parks in March

Wake County residents are invited to join Historic Yates Mill County Park staff and volunteers for the first corn grinding and mill tours of the 2009 season.

Corn-Grinding Tours
Now through November, costumed interpreters will lead corn-grinding demonstrations on the third weekend of each month. Admission to Corn-Grinding Tours includes a 30-minute tour of Historic Yates Mill and an up-close view of the corn-grinding process. Park visitors will also have an opportunity to purchase cornmeal and other mill memorabilia. The first corn-grinding tour of the 2009 mill season will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2009, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday, March 22, 2009, from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Historic Yates Mill County Park is located at 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh.

Heritage Tours
Now through November, Historic Yates Mill is also open to the public for weekly Mill Heritage Tours beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, except on the third weekend of the month. Organized group tours are available Wednesdays and Thursdays, while tours and other programs for school groups are available on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission to Mill Heritage Tours includes a one-hour tour of Historic Yates Mill, an explanation of the mill’s basic operations and community history, and a waterwheel demonstration.

Admission rates for both the tours are $5 for adults, $3 for students ages 7 to 16, $3 for seniors age 60 and over, and free for children 6 and under. Proceeds from all tours and mill merchandise sales go toward the upkeep and preservation of the Mill. For more information, call 856-6675. Summer Fun at Blue Jay Point – Sign up now for Summer Mini-Camps
Registration is now open for Blue Jay Point’s Summer Mini-Camps for children ages 6-8 and 9-12. The Summer Eco-Kids program, designed for kids ages 4 and 5, will be published in mid-March, with registration beginning Monday, March 23, 2009. For more information, call 870-4330. Saturday, March 7, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. – Peep, Peep, Peep
Join the American Tobacco Trail staff to learn how to recognize frogs and toads by the calls they make. Participants will also explore the Trail listening and searching for the amphibians. This program takes place at the Trail’s New Hill Parking Lot. Advance registration is required. The cost is $3 per person or $5 per family. For more information, call 387-2117. The New Hill Parking Lot at the American Tobacco Trail is located at 1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, Apex.

Saturday, March 7, 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. – Fox Trackers
People of all ages are invited to hike on the American Tobacco Trail to look for foxes. Participants can learn how to search for fox tracks, fox scat and other signs fox leave behind, and can make a fox track mold to take home. Advance registration is required for all programs at the Trail. The cost is $3 per person or $5 per family. This program takes place at the White Oak Church Parking lot. For more information, call 387-2117. The White Oak Church Parking lot at the American Tobacco Trail is located at 1305 White Oak Church Road, Apex.

Saturday, March 21, 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Jog for a Cause
People of all ages are invited to take part in the "Joggin' for Your Noggin" 5K Run, Walk & Roll-A-Thon at Lake Crabtree County Park to fund research for brain injuries. Prizes will be awarded for the most pledge money donated from a team or individual.
