NEWS: Household Hazardous Waste Program Expands July 1

Wake County’s Household Hazardous Waste recycling program will expand from once per month to six days per week at both the North Wake and South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facilities beginning Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Acceptable materials, including paint, automobile fluids, cooking oil, pesticides and herbicides will remain the same.

"We are excited that we were able to negotiate a contract that expands the days of operations and provide the citizens of Wake County with more recycling and collection services for less than we were paying before," said Tommy Esqueda, Environmental Services director.

Wake County conducted a series of pilot programs in fiscal year 2009 to determine the feasibility of increasing collection service and convenience for its citizens. After evaluating the results of these pilot programs, Wake County signed a new contract with Ecoflo Inc. to add collection days and locations for residential household hazardous waste.

The estimated cost for house hold hazardous waste collection in fiscal year 2009 is $657,782. The new contract cost for expanded collection service is $650,000 per year. It is estimated that there will be an annual cost savings of $7,782 in fiscal year 2010. This would result in a monthly cost savings of about $600.

South Wake Solid Waste Management Facility
6130 Old Smithfield Road, Apex
Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

These sites will be closed on Saturday, July 4, 2009, in recognition of Independence Day.
