Wake County to Host Dirty Bomb Workshop

2/5/2008

Wake County Public Safety's Fire/Rescue Division will sponsor a dirty bomb incident simulation as part of a Dirty Bomb Awareness Workshop for local emergency responders. The workshop will be held Thursday, March 27, 2008, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, March 28, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Wake County Fire Training Center, 5620 Shearon Harris Road in New Hill. The dirty bomb simulation will take place Friday morning, March 28, 2008.

The two-day course will teach fire and EMS officers how to respond if they are the first to arrive on the scene of a radiological incident. Students will learn how to secure blast zones and treat citizens exposed to radiation. Participants will also become familiar with the equipment used to detect dirty bomb radiation.

During the dirty bomb simulation, instructors will simulate a dirty bomb explosion and supervise students as they respond, providing fire fighters and EMS workers with hands-on experience.

Experts teaching at the workshop represent the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, N.C. National Guard, State Radiation Protective Division and N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
