FEATURE: Historic Oak View Park to Host Event Focusing on Reliving Farm Traditions

4/21/2009

Wake County will host Rural Reunion: A Farm Life Festival on Saturday, April 25, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Historic Oak View County Park, 4028 Carya Drive, Raleigh. This free event is part of the final weekend of the exhibit, Farm Life: A Century of Change for Farm Families and their Neighbors.

Rural Reunion focuses on reliving North Carolina traditions from the 1930s. Highlights will include BBQ and fixins, activities for kids, craft displays and live music. The BBQ lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and will be provided to the public while supplies last.

Farm Life: A Century of Change for Farm Families and their Neighbors, focuses on farming’s social and cultural context. Visitors to the exhibit’s four sections (farmhouse, fields, barn, and local gathering spots) will learn the story of farm families and rural communities facing change, and explore how political, economic and cultural roots influence families today, both on and off the farm. Throughout the exhibit, universal themes of family and community are addressed, touching on issues that resonate with farming and non-farming viewers alike.

The exhibit is made possible through a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For information, call 250-1013, send an email to oakview@co.wake.nc.us or visit Oak View’s Web site at www.wakegov.com/parks/oakview.
