Protecting Our Children: Safe and Healthy Families
4/8/2008
The Wake County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the week of April 7-11, 2008, “
National County Government and Wake County Government Employee Appreciation Week” in Wake County. The proclamation was made in conjunction with the National Association of Counties (NACo) National County Government Week, which is observed each April. This year, the theme for County Government Week is Protecting Our Children.
Wake County works to protect its children each day by providing safe, healthy and loving homes. One way this is done is through foster care and adoptive services.
Foster Care
Foster care is temporary care for children who have the ultimate goal of returning home to their birth parents or other relatives. Foster parents play a vital role in understanding the needs of the children during these difficult times, and their help, intervention and nurturing can make all the difference to a child in need.
Wake County needs foster homes for children of all ages, but particularly for teenagers, sibling groups, preschoolers, children with special emotional or physical needs and children from various racial or cultural backgrounds, especially for African-American children. At any given time between 50-60 Wake County children are waiting to be adopted.
There is not a single type of person who becomes a foster parent. Wake County foster parents represent all walks of life and all races, economic backgrounds and religions. Foster parents need to be caring individuals who understand the special needs of children who have been separated from their families.
Adoptive Services
Children available for adoption through our agency are in the foster care system and are unable to return home. We are working hard to help them find a permanent family willing to commit their love and so much more. Our children are typically school-age, and often part of a sibling group. We have a particular need for families willing to consider adopting older children.
The Adoption Resource Team works to bring people and resources together in order to facilitate adoptions for Wake County Human Services.
