South Wake Landfill Scales Used During Traffic Stops
3/5/2008
Wake County’s Solid Waste Management Division has partnered with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to reduce litter and overweight vehicles on southern Wake County highways and provide security at the South Wake Landfill, 6300 Old Smithfield Road, Apex.
Wake County will allow the Highway Patrol to use the scales at the South Wake Landfill to weigh big trucks during routine traffic stops, with an emphasis on commercial motor vehicle driver violations and unsecured load violations. In return, troopers provide an ongoing law enforcement presence at the landfill.
Each day commercial trucks take alternate routes to avoid weigh stations, and these overweight vehicles damage the integrity of the highway infrastructure.
The program will reduce litter and overweight vehicles on the highway and put troopers back out on patrol faster. It is also expected to reduce collisions involving big trucks and other vehicles.
