Homework Help: Databases

How is using library databases different from searching the Internet?

The library's subscription databases (accessed through OneSEARCH) contain information taken from published works, such as encyclopedia articles, academic journals and magazine/newspaper articles.

What are the advantages to using databases over general websites?

Information in databases:

  • Is published by professionals or experts in their field
  • Goes through an editorial process to check facts
  • Is easy to cite in a paper and usually provides the citation for you
  • Can help you focus your topic or suggest related subjects
  • Is updated frequently, often daily, and displays the date of publication.

Tips for using OneSEARCH:

  • From the OneSEARCH page, under "Select Category," click the box that says "Teens" to access all teen-appropriate databases; or, click the plus sign in front of that box and select teen-friendly databases by subject.
  • Check your spelling! OneSEARCH doesn't recognize misspelled words, so if you receive no results, that might be your problem!
  • The databases are listed in alphabetical order on the OneSEARCH page. If a database you are interested in has a webfeat symbol in its description, you must click on the name of the database to search it.
