How to Get a Library Card

You can apply for a Wake County Public Library card at any of our branches. A library card is required to check out materials or to use computers in the library.

To apply for your Wake County Public Library card, you must do one of the following:

  • Present a photo ID with your current address.
  • Present a photo ID and an item that verifies the current address (bill, lease, checkbook, etc.).
  • Present parent/guardian photo ID with verification of the current address.

Please note that:

  • Any child under 13 needs a parent or guardian to sign for a card.
  • Wake County residents are issued cards free of charge.
  • Non-residents may obtain a card to check out materials for an annual fee of $25 or may obtain a card for computer use only free of charge.
  • The replacement charge for lost cards is $1.

Do You Need a PIN?
Your Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a four-digit number of your choice attached to your library account. Your PIN allows you to take advantage of these library services:

  • Renew your books from home by telephone or Internet.
  • Request that books be held for you at your local branch.
  • Search a variety of databases available through NC LIVE.

You will choose your PIN when you register for your card. If you already have a library card but you need a PIN, call your local branch or get one the next time you visit the library.
